The meeting concern the sustainable utilisation of forages resources by domestic herbivores in constrained environments (mountainous and/or Mediterranean areas). In such conditions livestock farming systems have to combine production, preservation of high environmental value areas and product quality. The sustainability of animal production relies on their ability to reconcile economic performance based on the added value of high quality animal products and ecological performance based on the implementation of management practices relying on agro-ecological principles and allowing compensatory payments.

This multidisciplinary meeting aims at sharing/contrasting viewpoints, methods and results of specialised scientists working on grassland and rangeland evaluation and utilisation. In a context of climate change and environmental concerns, livestock farming systems in Mediterranean and mountainous areas share issues common to harsh environments, which can be dealt with by using similar theoretical and methodological frameworks.
Cultivated or spontaneous vegetation, herbaceous or ligneous species, all forage resources should be considered together, as complementary items contributing to the multiple performance of livestock systems.

The meeting will deal with questions related to forage production, environmental services, and utilisation of forage resources by animals and feed transformation in milk and meat. The spatial scales can range from plant animal to paddock, herd, livestock farming system and landscape.


The meeting will comprise three sessions common to the 3 networks and one session during which three workshops will be held.

Résumé FR : Le colloque traite de l'utilisation durable de ressources fourragères par les herbivores dans des milieux soumis à des conditions environnementales contraignantes (montagnes et/ou zones méditérranéennes). Dans ces conditions, les systèmes d'élevage doivent combiner production, préservation des zones à haute valeur environnementale et qualité des produits. La durabilité en terme de production animale repose sur la capacité de concilier performances économiques basées sur la valeur ajoutée de produits animaux de grande qualité, et performances écologiques basées sur la mise en œuvre de pratiques de gestion s’appuyant sur des principes agro-écologiques et permettant des revenus substantiels.
